A Belgrader in Love with the Sea, Anchored in the IT business

Vladislav Miletić has not sacrificed the beauty of everyday life to succeed in business, and has infused a bright cosmopolitan charm into his unique company, MFC, which stands as a real Serbian brand in an area of electronic business solutions.

Given the specific nature of your work and its current global appeal, tell us the story of how you came upon the visionary idea to become involved in something that would flourish 20 years later.

"I could explain this as the play of circumstance. It all began with a procedure to obtain a loan to renovate my house. While interacting with bank employees, where I intended to get a loan, I came to realize just how many problems those employees faced with paper documentation, and I realized that this was a problem that many organizations faced. So, instead of this chaos, I imagined an office without any paper. Also, at that instant, I changed plans. The problem of operability encountered by others continues to this day, and that is where solutions from the MFC Company can help. Our initial steps in business were modest, but over the long-term we continued developing solutions for other document forms, which are the backbone of modern-day business. That is how it all began; we currently continue to develop through change management."

Your firm has nearly 200 employees at present. Do the people around you share your vision or just follow it?

"As it turned out in practice, especially in the most turbulent of times for private businesses in this country, we all believed in the strength of the arguments provided by our vision and in the opportunity for future success, for which reasons we have maintained continuity and development. This informal strategy of faith – the faith of the team in the goal and the synergy of action – was invaluable. Personally, I am pleased when I see colleagues perceive the corporate agenda as being beyond their individual business agendas, and when our professional agenda corresponds to their individual and personal interests. To me, this is proof we are heading in the right direction together, because I, too, place my faith in them."

One fascinating piece of information is that nearly two-thirds of your team at MFC are women, as this is not the case with international IT companies. Is this part of corporate social responsibility?

"Yes, it is. Although, most of all, this has to do with their abilities and traits, meaning their education, expertise, responsibility, affability, as well as pronounced emotional intelligence and refinement. The rest actually has to do with social responsibility, which we have adopted as a business principle. Also, we subscribe to openness toward the academic community and fair-play in business, as the nature of our document management solutions is closely connected to environmental protection. The reigning axiom of technological progress – Think Green – has by virtue of things always been one of out own traits.

Could you make a brief presentation of your solutions? Who are they intended for?

"We deal in DMS – document management systems. This implies transforming all types of documents into electronic form, including business, technical, medical, and educational, as well as managing document flow through the business process. So, instead of sheets of paper, we have bases of their images and data that entail simple, electronic execution of all work tasks related to electronic documents. In other words, we promote safe document management, simple execution, electronic signatures, all accompanied by the user’s smile. We work more as a partnership than a as a client/seller relationship. We can boast of a large and diversified reference list of domestic and foreign users of our Spider software family brand."

Your team is entering its 30th year of existence, during which period it has contributed scientifically to the art of document management. What, precisely, are the benefits of using DMS?

"Some things we have been able to anticipate, some we have adopted through client demand, and with respect to others, we have had a hand in setting standards. The concrete benefit provided by Spider integrated solutions, which is at this time the focus of interest, saves up to 80 percent in time compared to the old way. Then, there is the swift and easy functionality of e-archives. Archive storage has been replaced by virtual storage. The documents are rendered accessible to authorized user(s) via the Internet anytime and anywhere, while at the same time the documents enjoy maximum protection.

All this is being integrated and supplemented by the existing information system, as this also adds new value to older investments."

What are your impressions about the absorption of the latest information technologies on the Serbian market and in the neighbouring area, where you also do business?

"Appreciation for modern technologies does exist. There is interest in this context on both sides – on the demand and supply sides. We aim to assist others to do this kind of work by offering the first Serbian IT franchise – the tested recipe of our Spider DataCentar licensed methodology. It is great that the government is interested in the progress of information systems. Also, putting in place corresponding legislation regarding the application of electronic signature regulations, especially in the area of e-Government, is of some significance."

How do you see your business evolving in the coming period? How do you rate your chances on the EU market?

"It’s hard being a visionary during the crisis that has befallen the global market, but developments in the field of European integration do instill optimism. For example, Serbia has signed the Stabilization and Accession Agreement. Also, cooperation with EFTA member-countries is about to be launched, and other favourable circumstances regarding an open European market in the IT domain are about to be met. Serbia possesses a wealth of intellectual resources and we have representatives that stand quite on par on the world IT scene. The synergy of our plans with the demands from the already mentioned European integration we at MFC find especially encouraging."

MFC has many partnerships with international firms, and you attend conferences and technology exhibitions abroad. Are your travels more on the business or the private side?

"Almost every trip is a business trip, or at least business initiated, and whenever it is possible to set aside time to get to know the diversity of a certain environment, I submit to that with pleasure. Also, I admit that I’ve come to rectify or supplement some of my own ideas by listening to the experiences of other people from different parts of the world, ranging from top experts at conventions to casual acquaintances in hotel lobbies at which I’ve stayed."

Have you sacrificed the small things in life to achieve success in business, and what do you enjoy most?

"I would certainly not be involved in any business success at the expense of my private life, if that meant no time for family, friends and naturally – sailing, sailing with family and friends. Of course, it is sometimes extremely hard to connect all this timewise and spacewise, but with good organization and a bit of luck – everything is possible.

You frequently fly by Jat Airways. Please share with us where you most often fly?

"Mostly to European destinations, and when the flight to Dubai is renewed – I will probably be among the first to take it."
