Land of surprises

Tunisia is 3000 years old of history, a treasure trove of ancient empires. Once the heartland of Roman Africa, today Tunisia’s rich heritage can be seen in the fascinating sites of Phoenician and Roman Carthage, the ruins of the Punic town of Kerkouane and the medinas of Tunis and Sousse, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

One moment you could be relaxing on the warm golden sands of a Mediterranean beach, the next you could be camel trekking in the Sahara. From luxurious thalassotherapy sessions to some of the world’s finest surviving Roman ruins, there’s so much more to Tunisia.

This hospitable land of colours and contrasts, spices and scents invites you to enjoy its natural beauty, ancient cities, lively festivals and warm friendliness of its people. Welcoming visitors to its shores has long been an honoured Tunisian tradition and an impressive infrastructure of modern hotels, restaurants, international airports tourism offices and information centres has been developed to add to our guests comfort and pleasure.

In this land of the familiar and the exotic one can watch the sunrise over the Sahara enjoy a gourmet meal at a seaside resort and top off the evening with a midnight swim in the pool of a modern comfortable hotel. Whether you prefer a long walk along miles of sparkling beaches, wind surfing the cool Mediterranean breezes, exploring ancient sites and legendary cities a game of golf or just a long lazy day relaxing on the warm golden sands, Tunisia has it all and offers a season for everyone’s taste. Sailing, surfing, diving, golfing, exploring the archaeological sites, deserts and oasis is a pleasure from October to May when the average temperature ranges from 12-28 °C.

An ideal climate, a long and gentle seacoast, the northernmost country of Africa has for over 3000 years witnessed the passage of Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Turks, Spanish and French. They came as fugitives or adventurers, to conquer or to claim, warriors and missionaries, traders and farmers each leaving a part of their story in stone or mosaics on hills of Carthage and the threshold of the Sahara. This heritage, Tunisia’s greatest wealth has been held in trust and preserved in hundreds of sites and museums from the small Punic museum in Utica to the vast collections of the prestigious National Museum of Bardo.

Feeling guilty about the long lazy days spent in delicious idleness bronzing on the beach? Often an hours drive from these modern resorts will bring you to another Tunisia, one of ancient Roman, Arab, Berber or Phoenician sites. Reminders of this rich historical past abound and visitors will return again and again captivated by the diversity of this Mediterranean land.

Tunisia has 1300km of the most beautiful beaches in Mediterranean. From the delightfully secluded beaches of the ruggedly picturesque northern coast, like Raf Raf and Sidi Ali El Mekki, to stunning palm-fringed sands that slope gently into the warm waters of the Mediterranean around the idyllic Isle of Djerba, Tunisia’s beaches are some of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean. Perfectly safe and perfectly suited for a variety of exciting water sports, or simply stretching out and soaking up the splendid year-round sun. Worldwide well known seaside resort areas – Sousse, Monastir, Hammamet and Nabeul, Djerba and Tabarka offer their visitors the finest sand beaches and crystalline water along with a dizzying choice of waterfront hotels featuring sun and sea sports as windsurfing and sailing, underwater sightseeing, fishing and short boat rides. Nearly hotels are built with the visitor’s comfort and enjoyment in mind and their restaurants feature both international as well as Tunisian Cuisine. During the peak summer season no effort is spared to provide the maximum of activities at the hotel and throughout the region. Summer festivals held nearby invite you join in with your Tunisian hosts to celebrate Father Neptune, share their local folklore, enjoy a concert or just have fun.

Tunisia has a very old tradition of "oriental-wellness" based on a visit to the hammam. A hammam is Tunisia’s variant of a steam bath, or the wet relative of the sauna. After performing a full body wash and receiving a massage, bathers can retire to the cooling room for a period of relaxation. In most of Tunisian hammams you can try "Ghassoul". It is a mineral clay with unique composition: it is extremely absorbent, making it excellent for cleansing, but unlike most clays which strip oils from the skin, ghassoul leaves skin amazingly soft. As it is rich in minerals, it also helps detoxify the skin whilst gently exfoliating.Tunisia is also famous for thalassotherapy & oriental Spa. It comes from the Greek word thalassa for ‘sea’ and refers to a variety of treatments that use seawater to revitalise the body and skin and in many cases to improve circulation. Other marine and ocean elements feature in this therapy including algae, mud and sand. All are cleaned and purified before use. Tunisia offers the best conditions for thalassotherapy: luxury 4* or 5* hotels directly on the beach, fresh seawater and seawater pools with professional medical teams. Special treatments with warmed-up seawater to 37°C, aquagym and seaweed wraps increase your metabolism, boost your energy and helps loosing weight. In Hydro Bathes controlled water jets create a water massage that has a healing and energising effect combined with the powerful detoxifying synergies of aromatherapy oils, the healing effects of mineral salts, and the rebalancing benefits of marine algae.

This country is an oasis of perfect greens. The view seems to be endless. Here, on the green fairways in front of the Mediterranean sea, the golf player has to concentrate and appreciate the beauty of the moment before hitting the ball.

Tunisia is a renowned world-class golfing destination, well established on the international circuit and enjoyed by professionals and amateurs alike. There are ten varied courses and ideal weather conditions prevail throughout the year.

Many hotels will arrange pre-set tee-off times and provide complimentary transfers to and from courses. No membership is required and everything from clubs to caddies can be hired at very reasonable rates. The first golf course was built in 1920 in Carthage and until nowadays you can feel the long tradition of Golf in Tunisia in the shadow of the old eucalyptus-trees. Most of the courses were designed by Ronald Fream and each of them is a kind of masterpiece offering a challenge for every player. Since 2008 the golf course "Oasis" in the middle of the Sahara receives players from all over the world. It is a 18-whole golf course in a fascinating landscape of dunes near the town of Tozeur.
